IBM Grid Computing Workshop

It is easy to misunderstand Grid Computing. There are a lot of technologies that have to work together to form the Grid solution context. It's the interaction of capabilities from across multiple functional areas that comprise Grid Computing -- it's also what can make it seemingly difficult to wade through the various marketing messages of grid vendors and why grid is often confused with other initiatives, such as utility computing.

The key is to consider the big picture. You don't need to install or build all of the components into your Grid solution right from the start. Organizations can start small, gain experience, realize value, then grow the sophistication and overall capability of their grid infrastructure by successively plugging in technologies.

For this reason, standards play an essential role to the continued expansion of grid. They foster interoperability between the various components and focus vendors on the job of providing higher levels of value in their implementations. Without standards inherent throughout the grid solution framework, it will be impossible for users to incrementally add capabilities, in a modular and coordinated way, to their grid environment. While grid and Web services standards continue to mature, it is imperative that organizations understand the standards position and strategy of the various vendors they choose to work with.

Lee Chin Yau and Sanjiv Chandane from IBM will be at the workshop to share with participants the various technologies and solutions from IBM that goes into the construction of emerging IT infrastructures such as grid computing.
