I welcome all SIGGRAPH members, it's open to everyone (free admission). Thank you, Irina Art Talk - "Desperate Optimists" (UK) Venue: Cyberarts Studio, level 5, University Scholars Programme, Old Admin Block, National University of Singapore, 10 Kent Ridge Crescent. Time and Date: 2-4pm, September 18, Thursday, 2003 Desperate Optimists (Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy, www.desperateoptimists.com) are from Dublin, Ireland. They have lived and worked in the UK since 1987. For over ten years desperate optimsits have been making works for a variety of media and contexts including digital arts, video, film, radio and performance. They have been invited to Singapore by spell#7 to direct and facilitate 'Wirecrossing', a collaborative web-film project involving 6 localartists from different backgrounds and interests. With a backgroundin both experimental and community theatre performance, Joe and Christine began to work specifically with new media about 5 years ago. They have since developed and exhibited a number of works for the internet. The are concerned with notions of narrative and place,as well as with the moving image, and the complex ways it intersects with time and space, its limitations and possibilities, especially when streamed online. Their work interrogates the idea of bringing real geographies and communities into virtual and fictional realms. The project in Singapore, 'Wirecrossing' will be a development of these concerns, the 6 Singapore-based artists will each be responsible for a segment of a 24 hour film shoot, which will shot inreal-time, translating into a 24 hour film, which will then be processed into the non-linear experience of a website. Joe and Christine are hoping to bring this concept to other cities and countries in the near future. They will present extracts from their work and discuss how their process has evolved, with particular emphasis on the use of digital technology in 'moving image' projects, working with communities and in collaborative situations. Desperate Optimists are here as part of The Year of Living Digitally The Year Of Living Digitally is a new media arts festival that is taking place throughout October at several venues throughout the city. It features film, web, peformance and music at Esplanade, Substation and Zouk and involves local and international artists from Europe and Japan. www.livedigitally.net
